Celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day 2026: Advancing Recognition, Respect and Inclusion

Indigenous Peoples Day 2026 in Cambodia was more than just a party, it was a deep celebration of recognition, respect, participation, cultural pride, and a shared commitment to the well-being and development of Indigenous Peoples.

Indigenous youths and communities showed their strength and energy in protecting their identity, culture, traditional knowledge, livelihoods, and natural resources. Their voices and leadership proved that Indigenous youth are not just the future, they’re important partners and leaders in Cambodia’s development today.

The participation of high-level representatives from the Cambodia National Assembly, the Prime Minister’s leadership, Deputy Ministers, relevant ministries, especially Ministry of Rural Development, UN agencies, NGOs, development partners, civil society organizations, and content creators also sent a powerful message that Indigenous Peoples are an important part of Cambodia’s social, cultural, and national development.

Since 9 August 2026, the Prime Minister’s Hun Manet expresses his sincere appreciation and admiration to all Indigenous Peoples for preserving and promoting their rich cultures, traditions, customs, and valuable heritage. These diverse cultural identities make Cambodia like a beautiful and vibrant “garden of many colors.”

He also mentions that beyond their cultural contributions, Indigenous Peoples have shows a strong sense of patriotism by actively protecting Cambodia’s borders and preserving its natural resources, which are some of our country’s most precious assets.

This celebration also really gets behind Cambodia’s National Policy on the Development 2009. This policy is a big deal because it’s a national framework that helps Cambodia recognize and support Indigenous Peoples. It covers everything from their identity, education, culture, health, livelihoods, community development, and how they participate in society.

The event across the country was the great way for Indigenous communities to show off their amazing cultural heritage. They had traditional performances, dances, Indigenous foods, traditional materials and handicrafts, songs, and non-timber forest products (NTFPs). These aren’t just cultural shows, they’re living knowledge, identity, resilience, and the contributions of Indigenous communities to Cambodia’s cultural and environmental heritage.

Indigenous Peoples Day 2026, shows us that when government, Indigenous communities, youths, development partners, civil society, and the Cambodian public all work together, we can build stronger connections, make sure everyone feels included, and give Indigenous Peoples more chances to contribute to Cambodia’s growth.

Cambodia is a place where diversity is celebrated, Indigenous cultures are cherished, Indigenous youths are supported, and Indigenous Peoples are seen as equal partners in creating a peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable society.

On August 10, 2026, the Indigenous Peoples Day was held in Stung Treng province. The event was co-organized by the Department of Ethnic Minority (MRD) and co-supported by development partners, including CIYA, through the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF).
